understand why
it was so important when
the day would end
and you’d complain
that you didn’t hear my voice
until I had no choice
and could no longer call
now I listen for your presence
to hear no sound at all
just the silence of my heart
alone beating
the echo that was lost
fleeting hopes
that the cost
of my indifference
would not be this
that I should long
to hear from you
the same way now of me
that you once missed
